Type 2 Diabetes and Inflammation are Old Friends

Type 2 Diabetes and Inflammation have a round about relationship. They feed off each other creating a dangerous condition in your body. The key to stopping this cycle is by lowering inflammation, which then starts to lower blood sugar levels. Patients with type 2 diabetes are by the very nature of their disease insulin resistant.

The insulin resistance is the root cause of their disease in the first place. Some patients with type 2 diabetes eventually have to inject insulin if other treatments don’t control glucose levels well enough.


Here is an overview of what happens in your body:

  • When you have high blood sugar, your body releases chemicals that weaken your immune system.
  • Because your immune system has been weakened, inflammation goes into overdrive and this raises your blood sugar even further.
  • This now weakens your immune system even more.


As you can see it’s a vicious cycle. Let’s look at this another way:

  • Your body breaks down carbs into glucose (a simple sugar). Your cells use glucose for energy.
  • Insulin created in your pancreas controls how much glucose remains in your blood and how much is absorbed by your cells.
  • When glucose levels go up more insulin is released.
  • However, it’s thought that inflammation can prevent your cells from absorbing the glucose.
  • This is called Insulin resistance.
  • The glucose levels in your blood go up because your cells aren’t absorbing it.
  • You now have high blood sugar, which starts off the process you read about previously, where your immune system is weakened and more inflammation kicks in.


Good and Bad Inflammation

The body is set up to take care of itself when we twist our ankle or catch a cold. It sends signals to start healthy inflammation to where it’s needed. Sometimes, however, the body works against itself. Inflammation can kick in when it isn’t needed. This creates problems and the result can be a Chronic Illness such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and arthritis.

The center for disease control has stated that:
Chronic diseases are responsible for 7 out of 10 deaths in the United States.
About ½ of all adults live with at least one form of chronic disease.


Inflammation is the Big Suspect Among Chronic Diseases

Internal Low-Grade inflammation can lead to low energy and make you more prone to getting sick. This makes you less motivated to exercise, which leads to further weakness.

What are the Causes of Inflammation:

  • Heredity
  • Poor Diet
  • Smoking
  • Infections
  • Stress
  • Toxins
  • Lack of Exercise





Preventing Disease Before it Starts

One of the most important things to understand about diabetes is that it is the result of improper insulin production in the pancreas. The ingestion of carbohydrates stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin. Without insulin, the cells cannot take up energy. The more carbohydrates you eat the more insulin your body has to produce to get that energy into your cells.

The cycle you have been reading about is usually brought on by poor lifestyle choices like in the list above. Yes, heredity does play a role but most of the time we get these diseases due to factors we can control.

Research has shown that diet and lifestyle changes are more effective than any form of prescription medication you can take. Getting the right anti-inflammatory nutrients into your body and exercising can prevent pre-diabetes from turning into full blown Diabetes.

Keep this in mind though, changing your diet, taking the right supplements and exercising is not a temporary solution. It’s something you have to commit to the rest of your life.

I am telling you this because I watched my dad’s health fall apart due to Type 2 diabetes and I am not going to let that happen to me. My family depends on me.
